Book Review: Voice Over IP Service,Book Review: VoIP Service Quality, Measuring & Evaluating
VoIP Service Quality: Measuring & Evaluating Packet-Switched Voice as the name suggest is not a book that describes how to set a VoIP system or to choose one from but instead provides a complete scientific reviews of the entire VoIP technology pointing its pro and cons with much justification.Emphasis on Quality of Service
The author deliberately tries to point out certain techniques which can and must be used to evaluate most factors on which quality of a service is dependent. The emphasis in the entire book is about quality of the service which we want to have and also how to translate simple problems of quality into mathematical problems which can be analyzed in much details rather than simply viewing it as a logical problem.Need for Quality
Since VoIP is gaining much popularity since it is seen as the internet alternative avatar of our telephone system, the demand for quality is also raising much and the only way to determine the quality is to test it and exactly what’s this book is about. Not Much details about VoIP Protocols
The author doesn’t goes much in-depth of topics like protocols, their implications, the need of protocols and their implementation but merely goes much on the quality of the system. The entire book is about nothing but quality of the VoIP system and hence is strongly suggested for reader more interested in the quality of a service rather than people who want to implement such system.Three sections of Book
The author has divided the book into three main sections and needless to say all three sections are focused on the word quality. The first section describes the need for quality in VoIP packets and the procedures currently used for producing maximum quality. The second portion describes many methods for actually testing the quality level of the Packet switched voice and also towards the current ways of the testing procedures for large networks voice testing systems.
The final portion of the book provides focus on other factors contributing to quality and the need and implementation for converting these logical problems into mathematical problems for more rigorous comparison of the testing of the switched packets.
Details about Quality and NOT about Implementation
Overall, the book is meant for the group who are more concerned over the quality of the packets rather than implementation of VoIP systems. Not much reference has been provided on other components of VoIP systems like protocols, implementation etc but the main focus has been given on the quality of such networks output.Book Review 2
