Doddle is a free online SIP softphone through which you can make phone calls from within a webpage.

It works with couple of VoIP providers or you can even fill it with your own SIP settings details.

You can integrate or embed Doddle webphone in your webpage as a google gadget.

You don’t have to register with doddling.com in order to use the web phone, you just need to subscribe a VoIP service somewhere.

With Doddle you can pick a telephone wherever you go, it is accomplishing a new VoIP trend by enabling real time communication built into web sites.

Doddle relies on, like most of VoIP Providers, the widely used SIP protocol for setting up and tearing down multimedia communication sessions such as voice over the Internet so that the use of doddle with VoIP providers is obviously seamless.

Recent happenings like Internet diffusion at low cost, coupled with great computer availability, new integration of dedicated voice compression processors and an evergrowing need for instant, around-the-world communication have changed common user requirements allowing VoIP standards to diffuse.

VoIP software provides an alternative way to use your VoIP Service not only as softphone over your pc in the home but anywhere that you travel. Voice over IP software like softphones or software phones are essentially computer programs that run on your computer and allow you to make voice over IP calls through your computer. The software phone is virtual and is usually designed to look similar to a cell phone. The user dials the recipient phone number using the softphone and is able to connect to the traditional telephone network to make phone calls just like a normal telephone.

Get a local number from your VoIP service provider

Telephone calls can be received also through VoIP software. The provider of your voice over IP service will give you a telephone number which can be dialed from a normal traditional telephone, a cellular phone or a voice over IP which will always connect to your software phone.

I've come across the new ACN IRIS 3000 video phone a few times recently and thought I'd write about them. I'm a big fan of videophones even if there doesn't seem to be any true adoption of industry standards that lets one videophone talk/video to another. Not to mention I reported first how Vonage's OEM'ed videophone, VisiFone, from Viseon hit the scrap heap due to Viseon's implosion. I was hoping to see Vonage's VisiFone interoperate with Packet8's Videophone, which I reviewed back in 2004. Back then Packet8 was the last broadband videophone service provider left standing, but it now appears that ACN has recently jumped onboard the videophone wagon. I hope they do well. Although videophone deployment has been slow to take off, I think offering subsidized, low-cost, or even free videophones to VoIP customers is one way of differentiating yourself from your competitors, especially if you are a single play provider like Vonage or Packet8 going up against Comcast, Time Warner, AT&T, etc. that offer Triple Play packages.

According to Techcrunch, we can soon expect to see a 7" or 9" iPod touch, which would make it more akin to a tablet PC than a portable music & video player with app support. The app support is a key point here. One of the problems with the iPod touch and similarly the iPhone is the relatively small screen. Sure, it's bigger than most portable devices, but it's still not quite large enough for optimal productivity.

By stepping up the screen size, not only will it improve productivity, you may even see users actually "work" within business apps such as Excel on the iPod touch. Try working in Excel on the iPod touch or iPhone on such a small screen is nearly impossible. In fact, I should point out that natively the iPhone and iPod touch don't support Excel. There is a workaround however.

GizmoCall, a Flash-based, no download, cross operating system VoIP app launched on Monday. GizmoCall isn't the first to offer a Flash-based VoIP client. I believe the first Flash-based VoIP app was Flashphone, which I discovered last year. I also found a Flash-based app that not only did VoIP, but it did SIP-based video as well.

In any event, I decided to give GizmoCall a go. Registering was easy and was done from within the Flash application. Simple entering a username, password, email address, and the captcha code was all that was needed.

Once logged in I was able to try the 'Test' call button which initiate a test call to their system. It worked flawlessly. I then made a test call to TMC's 800 toll-free number. The quality was good, but not great.

So who can you call? Well the beauty of GizmoCall is that not only can you call any other GizmoCall or Gizmo5 users, you can also call 800 numbers or SIP addresses for no charge. Ok, it's not free calls to any phone number, but it's a start.

You can also receive calls using GizmoCall. Simply login and then any other GizmoCall user can call you at that username. As long as GizmoCall is open in any window or browser tab (even if in the background) you will be able to receive a call.

Since it is Flash-based, GizmoCall works on all computers (Mac/Windows/Linux). While I like the idea of a "no-download" SIP client, I still like the full-fledged Gizmo5 client, which not only does SIP/PSTN calling, but it also supports IM/chat with Gizmo5, MSN, AIM, Yahoo! and Jabber. So I'd like to see a GizmoCall-lite (no IM/chat/presence/) and a GizmoCall-Full with IM/chat/presence capabilities.
